Late Night

Late night
Convenience store
Car stops
At the
Blinking
24 hours sign

He gets out,
Walks in
Scans the shelves
For that brand of milk
His son likes

The chocolate flavor
P35 each

He adds
A box of mints
A travel magazine
A pack of cigarettes (for him)
And heads to the counter

‘Good evening sir’
Says the cashier
She has big,
Curly hair
She scans his items
Not really seeing him
Eyes red and swollen
He watches her
Maybe he should say something?

He pulls the plastic bag
Off the counter
And is just about to turn away

When he hears the girl
With the curly hair
Start to cry
